Quran has not used word Abaya when instructing Muslims to cover themselves. However, it is a mandatory piece of cloth that has to cover a woman. Islam instructs all Muslim women to wear it, however, any name you may call it like Abaya, Burqa or any other word. The words used in Quran are as follows:

1.     Khimār — Head Cover or Veil

Surah An-Nur (24:31)

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty and not to display their adornment except what [ordinarily] appears thereof, and to draw their khimār over their bosoms…”

Meaning:

• Khimār literally means a cloth that covers the head.
• In pre-Islamic Arabia, women already wore it, but it often hung loosely. The Qur’an instructed women to extend it to cover the chest as well — ensuring modesty of both head and neckline.

2.     Jilbāb — Outer Garment or Cloak

Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59)

“O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw their jilbāb close around them. That is more suitable so that they may be recognized and not be harassed.”

Meaning:

• Jilbāb refers to a loose outer garment or cloak worn over one’s clothes when going out.
• The verse instructs believing women to wear it to be recognized as modest, respectable women and avoid unwanted attention.

3.     Hijāb — Screen, Partition, or Barrier

Surah Al-Ahzab (33:53)

“...And when you ask [the Prophet’s wives] for something, ask them from behind a hijāb. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.”

Meaning:

• Hijāb literally means a curtain, screen, or barrier.
• In the Qur’an, it is used in the context of a physical partition, especially for the Prophet’s wives, symbolizing a higher level of seclusion and respect.
• Later, hijāb came to mean modest dress in general, though that wasn’t the original Qur’anic usage.

Over the years this piece of cloth changed its shapes and colors and became a traditional wear for the Muslim Women. Today's abayas can be simple and understated, or adorned with intricate embellishments, such as beading and embroidery.

However, the trend has now been becoming popular and non-Muslim women in UK and other parts of the world are also adopting to this modest wear called Abaya. The abaya is now a traditional garment that has been worn different cultures by women for centuries, particularly in the Middle East. By definition It is a long, loose-fitting gown that covers the body from head to toe and is considered an essential item in many cultures for those who seek to preserve modesty and respect cultural traditions.

The abaya has its roots in Islam, where modesty and covering one's body is considered an important aspect of religious practice. In many Muslim societies, the abaya is a symbol of piety and devotion, and wearing one is a way for women to express their religious beliefs and cultural identity.
