Everything for a British winter, from £20 hoodies to £580 cowhide jackets. The two halves of this collection are meant to work together: the hoodies and sweatshirts layer underneath the jackets and coats, which is how you actually stay warm rather than relying on any single garment.

Start with the layer, not the jacket

Leather blocks wind extremely well but insulates poorly — that's the trade-off with every jacket on this page. A cowhide biker over a t-shirt is cold in December. The same jacket over a decent hoodie is comfortable well into winter.

So if your budget is limited, a £25 hoodie under a jacket you already own will do more for you than a more expensive jacket worn alone.

One practical note: buy the jacket with layering in mind. Slim-fit leather has no give, and a jacket that fits over a shirt will not close over a hooded sweatshirt.

Choosing a jacket

Cowhide is the workhorse — heavy, tough, tightly grained. Stiff at first, softens over weeks, lasts decades.

Horsehide is denser still and the connoisseur's choice. Hardest to wear in month one, best-looking in year ten.

Sheepskin is light, supple and warm for its weight, comfortable from the first wearing. Less durable than cowhide.

Lambskin suede is the softest, but the least weatherproof thing here — suede marks when soaked, which in Britain is worth thinking about.

PU is synthetic, and we say so on the product page rather than calling it leather. Lighter, no maintenance, a fraction of the cost.

Each product page names the actual material. Where it's genuine hide we say which animal; where it's synthetic the title says PU.

Hoodies and sweatshirts

Priced between £20 and £30, and useful in two ways: as a mid-layer under a jacket, and on their own in milder weather.

The plain and solid-colour styles are the practical mid-layers — no bulky print or texture to bunch up under a fitted jacket. The graffiti and printed styles work better worn on their own, where the design is actually visible.

Several are cut unisex rather than specifically for men, which generally means a straighter, roomier fit. Check the size guidance on each page.

Sizing — read before ordering

These are cut on Asian sizing, which runs roughly one to two sizes smaller than UK equivalents. Most UK customers should order at least one size up from their usual.

For jackets, size up further than feels natural. Leather has effectively no stretch, so a jacket that's tight on arrival stays tight — and you need room for what goes underneath.

Care

Different materials need opposite treatment, and getting it wrong causes damage that can't be undone.

Genuine hide: wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry naturally well away from radiators, condition once or twice a year.

Suede: never use conditioner or wax — they flatten the nap permanently. Brush it, and use a protector spray.

PU: never use leather conditioner either — the oils break down the surface coating. Wipe clean, air dry, hang rather than fold.

Hoodies and sweatshirts: wash cool and inside out, particularly the printed ones, and hang to dry rather than tumble drying.
