Suede is a different proposition to smooth leather. It's the underside of the hide, buffed to raise a soft nap, and on lambskin it comes out lighter, softer and considerably more supple than any smooth-finish jacket. This one is a biker cut in graphite — a grey with enough depth to read as a colour rather than as faded black.

The appeal is comfort. Lambskin suede is soft from the first wearing; there's no stiff break-in period the way there is with cowhide or horsehide. It drapes rather than holds its shape, so it sits close and moves with you. Polyester lining means it slides on easily over a shirt or fine knit.

Be realistic about the trade-off

Suede is the least weatherproof leather finish there is. The raised nap holds water, and once it's properly soaked it can mark, stiffen and lose its texture. In the UK, that matters.

Treat this as a dry-day jacket — spring and early autumn, evenings out, layering indoors. If you want something to wear through a British winter without thinking about it, a smooth-finish cowhide is the better buy. A suede protector spray before first wear is a sensible precaution, not an optional extra.

Note that these are Asian sizes and run one to two sizes smaller than UK equivalents — the letter on the label will not match what you normally wear. Go by the height guide, not the size name. Build matters too: if you're broader than average for your height, take the next size up.

Caring for suede

Suede needs different handling to smooth leather, and using the wrong products will ruin it.

Never use leather conditioner, wax or polish — they flatten the nap permanently. Brush it with a suede brush to lift the pile and lift out dust. Treat marks with a suede eraser rather than water. If it does get wet, blot it, let it dry naturally at room temperature well away from any heat source, then brush the nap back up once completely dry. A protector spray before first wear, reapplied occasionally, is the single best thing you can do for it. Never machine wash, tumble dry or iron.
