Coats and jackets for a British winter, from £51 to £275. Below is an honest guide to how warm each type actually is — because "winter collection" covers everything from a light layering jacket to a coat you can stand at a bus stop in.

How warm do you actually need?

Genuinely cold weather: the quilted coat is the warmest thing here. Cotton wadding traps air the way a smooth shell can't, and the length covers the gap a short jacket leaves. The faux fur biker jacket is the next warmest — thick pile holds a lot of air — and the fur-lined mid-length coat after that.

Autumn and mild winter days: the hooded PU coat is the practical middle option. Long enough to be useful, wind-resistant, and it has a hood, which most leather-look outerwear doesn't.

Layering pieces: the biker jackets, oversized jacket and cropped jacket are three-season rather than winter-proof. They block wind well but they aren't insulated. From December they go over a jumper, not instead of one.

Wind, rain and reality

None of these are waterproof. PU and faux leather shrug off drizzle and dry quickly; faux fur does the opposite — it holds water, takes a long time to dry, and mats if it's soaked and left. Quilted cotton fill loses its loft when wet.

Where they all earn their place is wind. Leather and leather-look shells block wind considerably better than wool of the same weight, which on an exposed day matters more than raw insulation.

On materials

Most of this collection is PU and faux finishes, and we'd rather say so plainly than dress it up. Every product page names the actual material. Where something is genuine hide, we say which animal. Where it's synthetic, the title says PU or faux. We don't call synthetic material leather.

Synthetics have real advantages in winter: they're lighter, they need no conditioning, they don't stiffen in the cold, and they wipe clean after a wet walk home. What they won't do is age the way hide does.

Sizing — and why it matters more in winter

These are cut on Asian sizing, which runs roughly one to two sizes smaller than UK equivalents. Most UK customers should order at least one size up from their usual.

For winter outerwear, size up further than you normally would. A coat that fits neatly over a t-shirt won't close over a jumper, and a coat you can't layer under isn't a winter coat. The exception is the oversized jacket, which is already cut roomy — take your normal size there.

Care

Three materials here need three different approaches, and using the wrong one causes damage.

PU and faux leather: never use leather conditioner, wax or polish — the oils break down the surface coating permanently. Wipe with a damp cloth, air dry away from heat, hang rather than fold.

Faux fur: never machine wash — agitation mats the pile for good. Spot-clean and brush it with a wide-toothed comb to keep the fibres separated.

Quilted and cotton-filled: dry flat or on a broad hanger, never in a tumble dryer. Heat flattens the wadding, and once the loft is gone the coat stops being warm.
