Abaya Sizing Guide: How to Choose the Right Size and Length
Most abayas that disappoint on arrival were not bought in the wrong size. They were bought in the wrong length — and length is the one measurement an abaya gives you no way to fix.
This guide covers what actually matters when choosing a size: why the numbers run small, how the cut changes how much the size matters, and what to do when you fall between two.
Abaya sizing usually runs smaller than you expect
Most abayas sold online are cut on Asian sizing, which typically runs one to two sizes smaller than UK and US equivalents. A UK 12 (US 8) is often an L rather than an M, and sometimes an XL.
This is not a fault in the garment — it is a different sizing convention — but it catches people out constantly, because the letters look familiar. The practical rule: order at least one size up from your usual, and two if the style is described as fitted.
Length is the measurement with no give
An abaya that is slightly loose through the body still looks right. An abaya that is two inches too short does not, and there is nothing to be done about it.
Before ordering, measure from the top of your shoulder straight down to where you want the hem to sit — usually the top of the foot, or just above the ankle if you prefer it clear of the ground. Then decide whether you will wear it with flat shoes or a small heel, because that changes the answer by an inch or two.
If you are tall, this matters more than the size letter does. A larger size adds width, but it adds far less length than most people assume.
What “one size” and “free size” actually mean
Both terms mean the same thing: the abaya is cut generously enough that it is not graded into separate sizes at all. The Huda Abaya and the Jinaan Abaya are both cut this way.
One size works well on a loose, flowing abaya because the fit through the body is not doing any work. What it does not adjust is the length — so the same rule applies: check the drop from shoulder to hem rather than assuming one size means it will suit any height.
The cut decides how much the size matters
Not every abaya is equally forgiving, and this is the part size charts never tell you.
Belted styles give you the most latitude. On something like the Layali Abaya, the tie belt sets the waist wherever you want it, so a size up simply reads as more fabric rather than as a poor fit.
Open and cardigan styles are the most forgiving of all. The Tetreem, the Riwa and the Nour Kimono are worn open over what is underneath, so the body measurement barely matters. Shoulder width and sleeve length are what to watch.
Fitted and wrap styles are the least forgiving. Where an abaya is cut to follow the body, the chest measurement decides the size, and sizing up changes the shape rather than just the room.
If you are between two sizes
Take the larger one, with one qualification. On a loose or belted abaya, the larger size costs you nothing — it hangs the same and the belt handles the waist. On a fitted style, the larger size will sit differently rather than simply more comfortably, so it is worth asking before ordering.
Plus sizes and wider ranges
Size ranges vary considerably between styles, and the range is worth checking before you fall in love with a particular abaya. The Nawal Abaya runs from S to 5XL, the widest in our range; the Tetreem runs L to XXXL. Several of the fitted styles stop at 2XL.
Why we do not publish measurement tables
Manufacturers supply size charts as images, and the figures on them are not always consistent with the garment that arrives. Rather than republish numbers we have not verified ourselves, we would rather answer the question directly.
Email support@worldoftrendz.com with your usual dress size and your height, and tell us which abaya you are looking at. We will tell you which size to order before you buy.
Common questions
Should I size up in an abaya? Usually yes — at least one size, because most abayas are cut on sizing that runs smaller than UK and US equivalents.
Does a larger size make an abaya longer? A little, but far less than people expect. Length is graded much more gently than width. If length is your concern, ask before ordering rather than relying on a larger size.
Will one size fit me? Through the body, almost certainly. The question is the length, which one size does not adjust.
Can an abaya be shortened? A plain hem usually can be. An abaya with beading, a border or a tiered hem generally cannot be shortened without losing the detail that runs along it.
