Eight leather jackets, from a £91 PU jacket to £580 cowhide. What separates them is mostly the hide — and since that's the thing that determines how a jacket feels, ages and lasts, it's worth understanding before you choose.

Choosing by material

Cowhide is the workhorse. Heavy, tough, tightly grained, and the reason motorcycle jackets have used it for a century. It arrives stiff and softens over several weeks, moulding to your shoulders. Buy cowhide if you want something that will outlast you and don't mind breaking it in.

Horsehide is denser still and the connoisseur's choice. It starts genuinely firm and creases sharply rather than softening evenly — that distinctive fold pattern is why Japanese repro brands built a following around it. Hardest to wear in month one, best-looking in year ten.

Sheepskin sits at the opposite end: light, supple, warm for its weight, comfortable from the first wearing. The trade-off is durability — it's thinner and scuffs more easily than cowhide. Buy it if you've found leather jackets heavy or restrictive.

Lambskin suede is the softest of all, with a raised nap instead of a smooth finish. It's also the least weatherproof thing here — suede holds water and marks when properly soaked, which in Britain matters. Dry-day jacket.

PU is synthetic. We say so plainly on the product page rather than calling it leather. It's lighter, needs no conditioning, doesn't stiffen in cold, and costs a fraction of hide — a reasonable trade if you want the look without the outlay or the upkeep.

Choosing by use

Everyday wear: the casual-fit biker or the PU jacket. Relaxed through the body, easy to layer, nothing you'll worry about.

Something that lasts decades: horsehide or top-grain cowhide. Both are investments that improve with use.

Comfort first: sheepskin or lambskin suede.

Two looks from one jacket: the brown cowhide has a detachable collar — lapelled biker with it on, cleaner and more restrained with it off.

Sizing — read before ordering

These are cut on Asian sizing, which runs roughly one to two sizes smaller than UK equivalents. Most UK customers should order at least one size up from their usual.

Leather has almost no stretch, so a jacket that's tight on arrival stays tight permanently. Slim-fit styles compound this. Where we have the manufacturer's measurements we've published the full table on the product page; where the chart only exists as an image we've said so rather than guess.

Common questions

Is it real leather? Some are, some aren't, and each product page states which. Cowhide, horsehide, sheepskin and lambskin suede are genuine hide. The PU jacket is synthetic and titled as such. We don't describe synthetic material as leather.

How do British winters treat leather? Well, in one respect: leather blocks wind considerably better than wool of the same weight. But none of these are waterproof, and only some are lined. Treat them as three-season jackets that need a layer underneath from December.

How should I care for it? Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry naturally away from radiators — direct heat is what cracks hide. Condition genuine leather once or twice a year. Never condition PU; the oils break down the coating. Suede needs a brush and a protector spray, never conditioner. Full instructions are on each product page.
